It is the Sierra Leone national football team is the representative of Sierra Leone in men's international association football. The team is controlled by the Sierra Leone Football Association. The nickname of the team is Leone Stars. The team is a member of the West African Football Union. The team has never been able to qualify for FIFA World Cup; however they have qualified for Africa Cup of Nations thrice. The team is part of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The first game played by Sierra Leone was in their home stadium on August 10, 1949 when they played an additional British colony Nigeria the match was defeated by 2-0. In 1954, they faced another British colony, and British controlled U.N trust territories, Gold Coast and Trans-Volta Togoland (now Ghana), and were defeated 2-0. On the 22nd of April, 1961, they played Nigeria and were defeated by 4-2. The 12th of November, 1966, they played Liberia during their very first game against a colony outside of Britain and they won their first draw 1-1. One week later they were beaten 2-0 by Liberia. 13 January 1971 was the day that Sierra Leone played their first match against a non-African side West Germany's B-team. The game was played in Sierra Leone was won 1-0 by the Germans. The first game played by Sierra Leone outside Africa is also the first time they played game against the Asian country, China. They were defeated by 4-1 in China on the 5th of April, 1974.
The golden age of Sierra Leone was in the 1990s, qualifying for both 1994 as well as 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. But, they were then required to withdraw from the subsequent two editions in the wake of conflict in the Sierra Leone Civil War.
In August 2014 In August 2014, it was announced that the Sierra Leone FA cancelled all soccer matches in an attempt to contain the outbreak of 2014 Ebola virus that was sweeping through Sierra Leone, a week after the Liberian FA also did the same. Sierra Leonean players playing outside Sierra Leone, such as Michael Lahoud, who plays at America, for example United States, were discriminated against by opposing players, refusing to exchange shirt, shake hands, or permit them into certain areas within the stadium simply because they worry that they may carry the virus. It was also reported that the Sierra Leonean national team wasn't permitted to play in home games and all players must be from outside the country. In October of 2015, Sierra Leone suffered a shocking loss in the face of Chad during the 2017 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the home match having been played out in Nigeria. A year later, Sierra Leone very nearly was able to qualify to play in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, only one point behind the Group I winner Ivory Coast.
On October 5, 2018 on 5 October 2018, the Sierra Leone Football Association was removed from FIFA as well as Leone Stars were also suspended. Leone Stars were excluded from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
