Randers FC (Danish pronunciation"'Ranas'") is an elite soccer club located within Randers, East Jutland, Denmark which plays in the Danish Superliga the top league in the Danish football league system. It was established on the 1st of January, 2003 The club is based on the license granted to Randers Freja, a former three-time Danish Cup winning team. The club as of 2022 was a winner of its Danish Cup twice in its history. Randers has its matches played at the stadium with a capacity of 10,300. Cepheus Park Randers.
The club was founded on January 1, 2003 as a result of a partnership between six Randers-clubs from the local area; Dronningborg Boldklub (founded 1928), Hornbaek Sportsforening (founded 1945), Kristrup Boldklub (founded 1908), Randers Freja (founded in 1898), Randers KFUM (founded 1920) and Vorup Frederiksberg Boldklub (founded 1930) in continuation of Randers Freja's (at the time) 1st division team.
In its first season as the club was newly formed, Randers ended in fourth spot on the Viasat Sport Division with 51 points. As captain for the Denmark national team that was crowned champions at UEFA Euro 1992, Lars Olsen was the head coach for the squad. The next season, Denmark finished in second place , scoring 66 points , and was then moved to the nation's most prestigious league known as that of the SAS Liga.
With just 24 points during the 2004-05's season in the SAS Liga, Randers finished in the bottom of the pile. In the 2005-06 season but Randers did well, being promoted into the SAS League with 61 points and also being the winners of the Danish Cup with a 1-0 victory against Esbjerg during the semi-final on the 11th of May at Parken Stadium on 11 May 2006. Randers is the very first club since 1974 to have won the Danish Cup although playing in the second-highest league in Denmark.
In the middle of 2005 the club signed the former Denmark national midfielder Stig Tofting on a no-cost transfer following AGF his former club was unable to allow him to take part (even at no cost) because of his violent past, with several sentences. 2. Tofting was made as Assistant Coach in November of 2006.
In the 2006-07 season Randers ended up in eighth position with 38 points and also participated of the UEFA Cup the season before when the club played IA in Iceland, FBK Kaunas of Lithuania and the main clubs Fenerbahce of Turkey.
Prior to the beginning of the 2007-08 season Randers hired the former England National team member Colin Todd as its new manager. Randers began the season with a bang and won the first four games (most notable was a 5-0 victory over Aalborg BK).
In the second part of the 2007-08 season, Randers continued to improve in the Danish league. With the addition of new players Marc Nygaard and Soren Berg The expectations increased in the course of time and Randers eventually finished in sixth place after an 1-0 win over Brondby IF in the final game of the season.
The 2008-09 season kicked off with a positive start for the club, with an impressive 3-1 win over local AGF, a rival club AGF. Randers kept its good start with a 1-1 draw against Copenhagen. In the third game, Randers was scheduled to take on Brondby away. The club has never lost to Brondby away from home before. Randers were able to win 0-3 thanks to goals scored by Carsten Fredgaard Bedi Buval, and Tidiane Sane. After five round, Randers was still undefeated and during the end of the winter break Randers was placed in the middle of the table.
On the 4th of November, 2008 Randers announced that the former Danish national John "Faxe" Jensen would be the new manager of the club from 1 July, following the expiration the contract of Colin Todd. 4. Todd however, did express his displeasure with the way Randers have handled the situation. He also criticized the club for placing him in a precarious position.
Jensen took over the manager's job six months ahead of schedule due to the fact that the club had agreed to a deal with current manager Todd. Jensen was officially named the new manager on the 5th of January. Jensen began his stint at Randers well by winning his first league match in the league against AGF, a local rival AGF 1-1. But the team was unable to keep the winning momentum when they were drawn against Vejle BK, and then suffered a 3-1 loss to the top three teams OB, Copenhagen and BIF. The streak of losing culminated with a loss of 1-6 to Nordsjaelland.
The team, however, did well in overcoming the losing streak, and went on to win the following five games, creating a brand new club record of winning streak. The season concluded with a draw of 3-3 to Danish Champions Copenhagen and a fifth place final, which was the best club league ranking in the history of the club. Marc Nygaard claimed the golden boot for his 16 goals in the entire season. Morten Nordstrand, who was recognized for scoring a penalty during the final game and also scored an impressive goal score of 16, however Nygaard received the award since he was the only player to achieve the goal of 16.
Randers and Faxe made the decision Faxe and Randers decided that Tofting did not seem to be the best option for the position of assistant manager, and on May 1, 2009 the team made it clear that Tofting's contract was not to be renewed. The 2nd of June was when the club announced Jensen's two colleagues from the Euro 1992 champion Danish team The two were Henrik Larsen and Flemming Povlsen were appointed assistant managers. Larsen was named the first assistant manager, while Povlsen as assistant was focused on the team's offensive. But, following a disastrous beginning to the 2009-10 season , with just two points scored from 11 league matches, Jensen along with his staff were let go of their contract.
Ove Christensen was named the new head coach of Randers for the duration in the season 2009/10. He was given the task of trying to protect Randers from relegation, though Randers was expected to be dropped at winter break, according to experts and media. But, a record-breaking victory that saw 16 games without a loss meant the team's top-flight status would be decided on the last date of this season. Losing to Brondby means that the event that AGF had won against OB the top team in this spring would get delegated. OB was able to win 0-3, and Randers fell in its first game in the second period of the season, with a score of 1-3, making sure Randers maintained their status as top of the league. Yura Movsisyan was perhaps the most important factor in Randers' success, as the striker scored seven goals in 13 games.
When Ove Christensen joined the club in the team, he gave it an overhaul. Nine players were let go or sold during the winter break in the 2009-10 season. He also signed a number of players: Anders Egholm from SonderjyskE, Morten Karlsen from Nordsjaelland and Soren Jensen who was on loans from Odd Grenland. Christensen signed a single-year deal as the head coach the 17th of May 2010.
The following season However, Christensen could not follow up with the same victory and was dismissed following losing to Brondby. Peter Elstrup and Allan Kuhn were Brough into the role of caretaker but did not stop Randers from being relegated at the close this season. Michael Hemmingsen was named new head coach and was given the job of bringing Randers again to Superliga. With Hemmingsen as head coach Randers finished the 2011-12 season second on the Danish 1st division and being promoted back in the Superliga.
Despite being promoted in the Danish Superliga, Hemmingsen was appointed coach by the former Randers director Colin Todd, who returned to the club after his coaching stint from 2007 to 2009. Randers performed well in its debut season after its promotion and finished its 2012-13 league season in third position which was the club's highest ever league performance. The team also made it to the finals of the Danish Cup, but lost 1-1 to Esbjerg. However, the result of the league led to the conclusion that Randers were to take part as a team in this year's UEFA Europa League. It was during the final round of qualifying where it faced Rubin Kazan. Randers was unable to win the home match by a score of 1-2, and the away game with a score of 0-2, and failed to make it through an event in group.
In the 2006-07 season, Randers were able to make it to in the UEFA Cup as Danish Cup winners. The 2009-2010 season was the time when the club was invited be a part of the Europa League due to its second-place finish on the Danish league Fair Play ranking - behind the champions of 2008-09 Copenhagen who claimed the Denmark's UEFA Champions League spot. The 2010-11 season was the first time the club was a participant as a participant in the Europa League due to its second-place finishing at the top of the Danish league Fair Play ranking - behind the 2009-10 champions Copenhagen and again claiming their UEFA Champions League spot.
