It is the Malawi National Football Team, also known as The Flames, represents Malawi internationally in football and is managed by the Football Association of Malawi. Prior to 1966 they were also known as"the Nyasaland the national team of football.

They've been selected for the three Africa Cup of Nations, in the years 1984, 2010 and 2021. They also were winners of their first CECAFA Cup in 1978, 1978 and 1988.

1. History

Malawi first became eligible for an African Cup of Nations in 1984, when just eight teams participated in the competition at Ivory Coast. After a 3-0 loss to Algeria, World Cup participants in 1982 and 1986, Malawi lost 2-2 in the second match against eventual winners Nigeria. In a 0-1 defeat in the game against Ghana, Malawi ended the group stage with a single point in the bottom of the table , and was eliminated from the tournament.

In the midst of 26 years Malawi participated in the Africa Cup of Nations again in the year 2010. The Malawian team gained due to having the elimination round for the continental tournament in the 2010 FIFA World Cup also served as the qualifying round for AFCON. In the group match from the final round Malawi was third, ahead of Cote d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso and with just four points and a an average goal difference of 4-11, was enough to get to the finals of the continental tournament.

In the event in Angola Kinnah Phiri's team was a major surprise. In the opening game of the group, Malawi defeated Algeria, which was a team that had obtained a place in to play in the World Cup, 3-0. One of the goal scorers is striker Russel Mwafulirwa. He in the moment was on contract with the Swedish first division team IFK Norrkoping and was thus one of the two players from the 23-man squad that was active in Europe. Malawi lost the next game against the hosts Angola with a score of by a score of 2-0.

To allow Malawi to be in the quarterfinals for the first time even a draw in the final game of the group could have been sufficient. But the team fell by 3-1 against Mali. After only three minutes, the Malawians were down 2-0 but a goal by Mwafulirwa could not prevent the team's demise.
