Rasmus Hojlund has been handed his new squad number at Manchester United, with the Danish striker inheriting the No.11 jersey from Mason Greenwood.

The highly-rated 20-year-old has, following a £72 million ($91m) transfer to Old Trafford, become the most expensive frontman ever acquired by the Red Devils. The hope is that he will become the man to solve long-running issues in the middle of United’s attacking unit.

No squad number was assigned to him upon his arrival in England, as he was nursing a knock and Erik ten Hag had further transfer business to complete, but it has now been revealed that he will be taking on 11 after seeing United agree to part with Greenwood – with the 21-year-old winger completing a loan move to Spanish side Getafe.

Hojlund has been signed as a No.9, but Anthony Martial continues to fill that spot in United’s ranks after missing out on a summer move of his own. As a result, the latest Denmark international to arrive at Old Trafford – following in the footsteps of countrymen such as Peter Schmeichel and Christian Eriksen – is taking on the shirt that was once worn with such distinction by Red Devils legend Ryan Giggs.

United have also revealed that new signing Altay Bayindir is taking over the No.1 shirt from the departed David de Gea, left-back loanee Sergio Reguilon – who has arrived from Tottenham – is taking 15, Jonny Evans has been handed 35 after signing a one-year contract and Alejandro Garnacho had already revealed that he was moving up to 17 after taking inspiration from Cristiano Ronaldo’s early days in the Portugal squad.
