England international Tammy Abraham has been ruled out for at least three to four months with a serious knee injury sustained during Roma’s final Serie A game of the season against Spezia on Sunday evening.

The former Chelsea academy graduate came off the bench after 63 minutes of the Giallorossi’s eventual 2-1 win at the Stadio Olimpico, but was stretchered off in tears just 17 minutes later.

La Gazzetta dello Sport have reported on Monday morning that Abraham was immediately taken to a private medical facility for an assessment on his injured knee and given an MRI, which revealed a tear to the cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The paper also writes that the minimum layoff is expected to be in the region of three to four months.  Abraham asserted himself as one of the most impressive centre-forwards in the league during his debut season in the capital during 2021-22, netting 27 goals from 53 appearances, however, goals have been harder to come by this year with Abraham striking just nine times in 54 games across all competitions this term.

The 25-year-old’s injury is a concern to Roma’s management team heading into the summer transfer window, as La Gazzetta also claims that Abraham was one of the prime candidates to leave the club before the start of next season, but those plans could now be forced to change.  Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa had all been reported to be interested in a move for Abraham at various stages of the season.
