Neuer was ruled out for the rest of the 2022/23 season after fracturing the tibia and fibula in his right leg whilst skiing during the winter break. However, after building up his strength and fitness in Bayern's performance centre, the 37-year-old this week completed individual ball and goalkeeper-specific exercises on the training pitches at Säbener Straße.

I'm satisfied," Neuer told the Bayern website. "We're not setting ourselves a schedule. I'm trying to push the boundaries, to get the maximum out of everything so I can progress and move forward as quickly as possible.

Neuer, who is widely considered the greatest goalkeeper in football history, made 16 competitive appearances earlier in the season, as well as three for Germany at the 2022 World Cup. A Bayern player since summer 2011, the Schalke-schooled custodian has turned out 488 times in all competitions for the record champions, conceding 384 goals whilst keeping 233 clean sheets. He is contracted to the Bavarians until 30 June 2024.

Reacting to their captain's long-term absence, Bayern signed Switzerland No.1 Yann Sommer from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach on a deal through to summer 2025. He has played in every game so far this calendar year as Bayern close in on an 11th straight Bundesliga title. With three rounds of the 2022/23 season left to play, the defending champions are one point clear of Borussia Dortmund in one of the closest battles for top honours in living memory.
