Borussia Dortmund have established themselves as one of the biggest clubs in Germany along with Bayern Munich in the last decade. In the last 10 seasons, they have won the Bundesliga once and finished second on five occasions.
The Black and Yellows have not just made a name by becoming a challenger to Bayern Munich's supremacy in Germany, but they have also become a club known for nurturing some of the finest talents in world football. Several players such as Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ilkay Gundogan and Ousmane Dembele came to the club as relative unknowns but left the club as superstars. And on most occasions, the German side made big money by selling them.
Norwegian forward Erling Haaland became BVB's statement sale for 2022 when he joined Manchester City for a reported fee of €60 million. England international Jude Bellingham took things to another level in 2023, though, leaving Dortmund for Real Madrid in a deal worth €103m, potentially rising even higher depending on bonuses.
The Senegal international joined Dortmund in the summer of 2018 from Mainz 05. However, he played at the Signal Iduna Park for just one season (2018-19) before joining PSG in 2019. Diallo appeared in 38 matches overall for the Bundesliga club, scoring one goal.
The German defender was at Dortmund for seven years from 2009 to 2016, winning two Bundesliga titles (2010–11, 2011–12), two DFB Pokals (2011–12, 2016–17) and three DFL Supercups (2013, 2014, 2019). In 2016, Hummels joined rivals Bayern Munich for €35 million. However, he returned to BVB in 2019.
Mario Gotze, once touted as a future superstar, came through the youth system at Dortmund and made his professional debut for the club in 2009, spending four seasons at BVB before he jumped ship to Bayern Munich in 2013. However, Gotze won several accolades while he was at Borussia Dortmund, including two Bundesliga titles (2010–11, 2011–12), two DFB Pokals (2011–12, 2016–17) and one DFL Supercup (2019). He played a total of 103 matches for Dortmund, scoring 14 goals.
The Armenian winger spent three seasons at Dortmund from 2013 to 2016. His impressive performances for the Black and Yellow saw Manchester United come knocking with a big-money offer in 2016. With BVB, Mkhitaryan won the DFL Supercup in 2014 and scored 41 goals in 140 matches.
In what was one of the most talked-about transfers of the 2022 summer window, Haaland moved from Dortmund to Manchester City. The Norwegian joined the Bundesliga side only in January 2020 and during the two-and-a-half years he spent at the club, he developed into one of the world's hottest forwards. Haaland, who led BVB to the DFB Pokal 2020-21 title, scored a whopping 86 goals in 89 matches and it was not surprising that Manchester City shelled out the big bucks and triggered his release clause.
The Gabon star joined Dortmund from AC Milan in 2013 and became a hit with the BVB fans. The enterprising forward played for four-and-a-half seasons at BVB. During the winter transfer window of the 2017-18 season, Aubameyang was sold to Arsenal. He won three trophies during his time with the club - DFB Pokal (2016/17), DFB Supercup (2013, 2014). Aubameyang scored 141 goals in 213 matches in all competitions.
A Dortmund youth product, the American was yet another high-profile sale made by the German club. Pulisic made his professional debut for BVB in 2016 and stayed put for three seasons. His performances at a tender age saw him get noticed by the big clubs and Chelsea made an offer in 2019. Pulisic won just one trophy in the three seasons he was at Dortmund - the DFB Pokal in 2016-17.
The English winger joined Dortmund in 2017 from the academy of Manchester City and spent four seasons at the club. During his time in Germany, Sancho won two titles - DFB Pokal (2021-22) and DFB Supercup (2019). He also won several individual awards like DFB Pokal 2020-21 top goalscorer and the Bundesliga Goal of the Month Award in February 2019, while featuring in Bundesliga Team of the Season in 2018-19 and 2019-20. In 137 matches for the club over four years, Sancho netted 50 goals. Having turned the heads of many Premier League giants with his displays at BVB, it was Manchester United who finally bought him for a mammoth fee of €85 million in the summer of 2021.
Bellingham didn't need long to make an impact at Dortmund after joining the Bundesliga giants from Birmingham City in 2020. The versatile midfielder instantly became an important first-team member and bigger clubs came circling within months of his arrival at the Signal Iduna Park. Liverpool were confident at some point that they would be able to lure the gifted youngster back to his native country, but they pulled out of the race to sign Bellingham when it became apparent his price tag would surpass the €100m mark. Madrid were not too bothered about that number, though, and decided to splash the cash in June 2023 to further strengthen an already impressive midfield.
The French winger joined the Bundesliga outfit in 2016 from Rennes. However, he spent only a season at the club, in which he scored 10 goals in 50 appearances and won the DFB Pokal 2016/17. His electric pace and dribbling ability saw Barcelona come knocking in the summer of 2017 with a club record fee.
